A tert-butyldimethylsilyl group (TBDMS group) or triisopropylsilyloxymethyl group (TOM group) is commonly used as the protecting group. Both TBDMS and TOM groups can be deprotected by treatment with fluoride ions such as tetrabutylammonium (TBAF) solution.
