Choosing a ligand is crucial for catalyst activity and selectively in organometallic chemistry. A phosphine is a common ligand. Appropriate selection of functional group on phosphorus can give effective results. In particular, the development of chiral on phosphine is a key research area in metal-catalyzed asymmetric synthesis. This research field won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2001.
